Minnesota residents now have a new reason to go solar. The Xcel Energy Solar Rewards program strives to encourage consumers and businesses to do their part to improve the environment. Through the rebates offered by Xcel Energy, the process of installing solar panels on a home or office building can be made more affordable.

Concern for the future of the planet hasn’t waned in recent years, with experts cautioning that if something dramatic isn’t done soon, the problem will continue to worsen. A recent report from the United Nations warns that if measures aren’t taken to limit carbon emissions, in 15 years the problem will be too severe to solve with current technology.

UPDATE - MN State Senate and House Pass a 1.5% Solar Standard:

This is great news for all Minnesotans! The Minnesota Senate and house dropped the percentage of Minnesota energy that must come from solar, but they moved up the timeline to 2020. This means that over the next 6 and a half years Minnesota will have 450 MW of solar installed.

Xcel has delayed the application cycle for SolarRewards for 2013! That's great news if you haven't yet looked into solar for this year. Xcel said they will begin to accept applications in February or March of this year.

XCEL Solar Rewards Rebate

Xcel has extended their SolarRewards program in Minnesota as a result of a ruling by the MN Department of Commerce, requiring that the program must continue to be funded at $5 million per year through 2015.
